In the early morning hours of a Saturday in Macon, Georgia, a beloved member of the community, Prakash Patel, was tragically killed. The 40-year-old Indian man was working as a clerk at the Gary Food Mart and Sunoco Gas Station on Bloomfield Drive when two men entered the store with guns drawn. It was approximately 1:25 a.m. on June 18, 2016, when the armed robbery took a fatal turn. Patel was a kind-hearted man, known for helping customers, sometimes even with his own money.
Surveillance footage from the store captured the harrowing event, showing two men bent over and pointing their firearms toward the counter where Patel was working. One of the assailants was armed with a silver handgun, while the other carried a sawed-off shotgun. The man with the handgun leaped over the counter as the other kept his shotgun aimed at Patel. During the course of the robbery, one of the men shot Patel in the chest. Despite the presence of other people in the store, no one else was physically harmed. The robbers fled the scene with cash. Emergency services were called, and Patel was rushed to the Medical Center, Navicent Health, but he was pronounced dead at 2:16 a.m.
The Bibb County Sheriff's Office immediately began an investigation into the robbery and homicide. Less than a month later, on July 16, 2016, authorities announced the arrest of 20-year-old Antwaine Cardelle Couch in connection with the case. After being questioned by deputies, Couch was charged with felony murder for his role in the robbery and shooting. He was subsequently indicted by a Bibb County grand jury on multiple counts, including malice murder, two counts of felony murder, two counts of aggravated assault, and one count of armed robbery. Couch was held in custody without bond.
While one suspect was apprehended, the investigation continued as authorities searched for the second man involved in the fatal shooting. The second suspect, also a Black male, was pictured in the surveillance footage but remained at large. The community mourned the loss of Prakash Patel, holding a vigil to show support for his family. News of his death reached his parents in India, who sought to obtain visas to travel to the United States for his last rites. The search for the second suspect and the legal proceedings against Antwaine Cardelle Couch marked the next steps in the quest for justice for Prakash Patel.
