In the evening hours of January 19, 2022, a sense of normalcy was shattered on Wren Avenue in Macon, Georgia, when gunfire erupted, forever altering the lives of two families. 15-year-old Carmelo Ross, a male student of the Bibb County Public School System, was standing outside a house with another 15-year-old male when a car reportedly drove by and multiple shots were fired in their direction. The sudden violence left both teenagers with gunshot wounds.
Emergency services were quickly dispatched to the scene, and both Carmelo and the other teen were rushed to Atrium Health Navicent for medical attention. Despite the efforts of medical staff, Carmelo Ross was pronounced dead shortly before 8:30 p.m. The other teenager was listed in stable condition and survived the shooting.
Carmelo was remembered as a fun, outgoing, and intelligent young man who enjoyed rapping, listening to music, and spending time with his cousins playing video games. A former teacher, deeply saddened by the news, recalled his 'pretty smile' and the positive impression he had left on her. His family, including his parents LaChandra Broxton and Carlos Ross, were left to mourn the tragic and senseless loss of a young life full of potential.
In the immediate aftermath of the shooting, the Bibb County Sheriff's Office opened an investigation into the homicide. Authorities appealed to the public for any information that could lead to the identification and apprehension of those responsible for Carmelo's death. However, despite the initial investigation and public appeals, there have been no subsequent reports of any arrests being made or suspects being publicly identified in connection with the drive-by shooting that claimed the life of Carmelo Ross.
