On a late Sunday afternoon in November, a dispute between neighbors over the riding of ATVs near Byron, Georgia, escalated into a tragedy that claimed the life of 41-year-old Patrick Michael Sondron, a sergeant with the Peach County Sheriff's Office. A United States Air Force veteran, Sondron had served with the sheriff's office for 13 years, having previously been with the Fort Valley and Byron police departments.
The incident unfolded on November 6, 2016, when Sondron and his partner, Deputy Daryl Smallwood, responded to a 911 call from residents who reported being threatened with a firearm by a neighbor. After interviewing the complainants, the two deputies proceeded to the home of the suspect, Ralph Stanley Elrod. As they approached the house, Elrod emerged and opened fire, striking both officers. The initial complainants witnessed the shooting and immediately called 911 again to report that the deputies had been shot.
Responding officers from multiple agencies arrived at the scene to find a volatile situation. Elrod had armed himself further and was positioned behind a patrol car, from where he fired at the newly arrived officers. During the ensuing shootout, Elrod was shot and wounded, allowing law enforcement to take him into custody. Sergeant Sondron was rushed to a local hospital but succumbed to his injuries. Deputy Smallwood was critically injured and passed away two days later.
Following his arrest, Ralph Stanley Elrod was charged with two counts of murder and multiple counts of aggravated assault. Investigators later recovered security footage from Elrod's home that captured the initial confrontation and shooting. In September 2018, to avoid a potential death penalty, Elrod pleaded guilty. He was sentenced to two consecutive life sentences without the possibility of parole, plus an additional 100 years in prison, ensuring he would spend the remainder of his life incarcerated for the deaths of Sergeant Patrick Michael Sondron and Deputy Daryl Smallwood.
