In the late hours of a September evening in Byron, Georgia, a long-standing friendship was tragically cut short, leaving a community in shock and a family to grieve an immense loss. Claude Dean Deaton, a 46-year-old white male, was fatally shot on September 30, 2022, following a heated argument with his roommate. The ensuing investigation would reveal a history of conflict between the two men, exacerbated by alcohol, that culminated in a senseless act of violence.
Deaton, a CDL truck driver born in Macon, was known by friends and family for his love of working out, listening to music, and watching UFC. He was a father to a daughter and a son who were left devastated by his sudden death. On that fateful night, neighbors reported hearing Deaton and his roommate of over 30 years, Rodney Slocumb, arguing. The dispute, which had started outside their residence, reportedly escalated when they moved indoors.
Sometime later, Deaton emerged from the home, dropping his keys and cell phone before collapsing. In his last moments, he was able to tell a neighbor that Slocumb had shot him. A single bullet had struck him in the upper chest. Despite the immediate response from Byron police and EMS, Deaton succumbed to his injuries and passed away on October 1, 2022.
Rodney Slocumb was arrested at the scene and subsequently charged with the murder of his long-time friend. The charges against him included murder, aggravated assault, and possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation was called in to assist the Byron Police Department with the case. The incident served as a grim reminder of how unresolved tensions can tragically escalate, leaving a lasting impact on a family and a community.
