A star basketball player at Stockbridge High School, he had recently attended his prom and was just weeks away from his high school graduation. With plans to play basketball at Indian River State College in Florida, his dreams were beginning to materialize. On the night of May 13, 2017, a celebration was in full swing at his cousin's home in McDonough, Georgia, to honor his college acceptance.
The joyous atmosphere of the party took a dark turn when a fight broke out among the attendees. The altercation quickly escalated, and gunshots rang out, striking Jesse. Despite his brother's frantic efforts to rush him to Henry-Piedmont Hospital, Jesse Thomas succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead. The news of his sudden and violent death sent shockwaves through his community, leaving his family, friends, and teammates devastated.
In the aftermath of the shooting, the Henry County Police Department launched an intensive investigation. After interviewing over 50 witnesses, they identified 19-year-old Dexter Deshawn Covington as a person of interest. Covington later turned himself in to the authorities and was subsequently arrested. He faced a series of charges, including murder, aggravated assault, nine counts of reckless conduct, and criminal trespassing. The investigation suggested that the shooting was a tragic consequence of the fight that had erupted at the party.
