Anterrance Dejuan Gresham, a 30-year-old father of five, was fatally shot on May 15, 2017, in Lithonia, Georgia. The incident occurred in the evening as Gresham was outside the Lithonia Package store on Chupp Road near Covington Highway. He had reportedly just left the store on his scooter and had stopped to have a drink with his cousin when the shooting took place.
According to reports, a silver car drove by, and multiple shots were fired. Gresham was struck in the back, and his cousin was shot in the thigh. Gresham’s cousin managed to flee and get help. Before he lost the ability to speak, Gresham was able to tell a police officer that a silver car was involved. He was transported to Grady Memorial Hospital, where he later died from his injuries.
Three months later, on September 1, 2017, authorities arrested 30-year-old Quinton Bentford in connection with the shooting. He was taken into custody at a bus stop on Panola Road and subsequently faced murder and aggravated assault charges. Bentford was held in the DeKalb County jail.
However, the legal proceedings took an unexpected turn. During a probable cause hearing on September 22, 2017, a magistrate judge ruled that there was not enough evidence to proceed with the charges against Bentford, citing self-defense. Consequently, the murder and aggravated assault charges were dropped, and Bentford was released from jail in October 2017 after posting bond on unrelated charges. The DeKalb County District Attorney's office expressed their objection to the court's decision and stated that the case remained open and under investigation.
