In the summer of 2017, a series of violent, gang-related events in Canton, Georgia, culminated in the tragic death of 23-year-old William Kendrick Randall. On the night of June 25th, on Crisler Street, Randall and another man, Tony Samples, were ambushed and fatally shot. A third individual was also wounded in the attack but survived. The Canton Police Department was dispatched to the scene following reports of gunfire and discovered Randall's body in a grassy area.
The investigation into the double homicide revealed a motive rooted in gang rivalry. A street fight had occurred the day before the shooting, and one group subsequently posted a video on social media bragging about their victory. This act was perceived as a sign of disrespect by members of the Bloods street gang, leading to a plan of retaliation. Authorities determined that the ambush on Randall and Samples was the direct result of this feud. The attack was carried out with an overwhelming display of force, with more than 70 shots fired from multiple weapons, striking nearby homes and churches.
In the months that followed, a comprehensive investigation involving local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies led to the indictment of thirteen individuals on various charges related to the wave of violence. Among those charged were Byron Elrod, Brody Samples and Jeremy Zellous. These three were identified as the primary assailants in the shooting that claimed the lives of Randall and Tony Samples. Further investigation revealed that Elrod had also carried out a drive-by shooting on Crisler Street in an attempt to intimidate witnesses.
The legal process concluded in November 2021, when a Cherokee County jury found Byron Elrod, Brody Samples, and Jeremy Zellous guilty on a total of 59 counts, including felony murder, aggravated assault, and violation of the Street Gang Terrorism and Prevention Act. In January 2022, they were sentenced for their crimes. Elrod received a sentence of life in prison plus fifteen years, followed by thirty years of probation. Brody Samples was sentenced to life with the possibility of parole plus an additional five years, and Jeremy Zellous was sentenced to life with the possibility of parole plus fifteen years. During the sentencing, William Randall's sister provided a victim impact statement, speaking to the profound loss her family has endured.
