In the late hours of a Friday night in Dallas, Georgia, the life of 18-year-old Tommy Lee Robinson was tragically cut short. On August 18, 2017, following a Paulding County High School football game, a simmering year-long dispute between two groups of young people boiled over into violence in the Ivy Trace subdivision. Robinson, a recent graduate and former athlete at the school, was shot and killed during the altercation. Another 18-year-old, Timothy Nelson, was also shot and wounded in the leg but survived his injuries.
The investigation into Robinson's death quickly focused on a suspect, Darnell Isiah Priester, who was 16 years old at the time of the incident. Authorities determined that the fatal shots were fired from a second-story window of a home where the conflict had escalated. Priester was taken into custody at his mother's house on August 24, 2017. He was charged as an adult with multiple felonies, including murder, four counts of aggravated assault, and one count of aggravated battery.
Priester's case proceeded through the justice system, culminating in a trial where he was found guilty of 10 felonies, including malice murder, felony murder, aggravated battery, five counts of aggravated assault, and two counts of possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony. Although the initial investigation did not classify the incident as gang-related, prosecutors at his sentencing presented evidence of his association with the Gangster Disciples. In March 2020, Darnell Isiah Priester, then 18, was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole, plus an additional five years, ensuring he would be held accountable for the death of Tommy Lee Robinson.
