In the early morning hours of December 4, 2017, the sound of multiple gunshots shattered the pre-dawn quiet in downtown Tifton, Georgia. When officers from the Tifton Police Department and the Tift County Sheriff's Office arrived at the scene near 3rd Street and Commerce Way at approximately 2:36 a.m., they discovered the body of 21-year-old Cedric Brown. He had sustained multiple gunshot wounds and was pronounced dead at the scene. The male victim's life had been cut short in an act of violence that would lead to a swift and intensive investigation.
As law enforcement began to piece together the events of that fatal morning, their investigation quickly led to the identification of suspects. One of the men, 26-year-old Kenneth Williams, was still at the scene when police arrived and was taken into custody. Further investigation pointed to the involvement of a second individual, 29-year-old Anthony Woods, who had suffered a gunshot wound to his leg during the altercation. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation was called in to process the crime scene, and both Williams and Woods, both from Tifton, were arrested and charged in connection with Brown's death.
The investigation did not end there. Several months later, in March 2018, a third suspect was apprehended. Derick Renard Ross, 28, also of Tifton, was arrested and faced charges related to the murder of Cedric Brown. The charges against the three men varied, with Williams facing counts of murder, felony murder, and two counts of aggravated assault. Woods was charged with felony murder and aggravated assault, while Ross was charged with aggravated assault, murder, and felony probation violation. All three men were held at the Tift County Jail as the legal process against them commenced.
