In the late hours of a Sunday evening in May 2021, the life of Rodrigo Francisco Juan, a 43-year-old father of three, was tragically cut short in the front yard of his mobile home on Ira Drive in Tifton, Georgia. A native of Guatemala, Mr. Juan had returned to his Tifton residence from Florida, where he had been staying with family for work, to have his truck repaired. It was there, in the quiet of the night, that he encountered a group of teenagers attempting to break into his vehicle.
The Tifton Police Department responded to a call at approximately 11:49 p.m. on May 23, 2021, and discovered Mr. Juan lying in his yard with multiple gunshot wounds. He was pronounced dead at the scene. The subsequent investigation, led by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, revealed that Mr. Juan had confronted the individuals tampering with his truck, an act that ultimately led to his fatal shooting. His red, two-door 1997 Dodge Ram 1500 pickup truck was stolen from the scene.
The investigation into the senseless act of violence led to the arrest of two local teenagers, Omarion Hayes, then 16, and Sebastian Sanchez, then 17. Authorities described the teens as being affiliated with a gang and involved in a car break-in ring. The district attorney characterized the killing as a 'senseless act perpetrated by gang-affiliated teenagers with stolen guns.'
In the ensuing legal proceedings, Omarion Hayes was tried as an adult and convicted by a jury of felony murder and aggravated assault. He was sentenced to life in prison with the possibility of parole. His co-defendant, Sebastian Sanchez, entered a guilty plea to charges of voluntary manslaughter and aggravated assault. He received a sentence of 40 years, with the stipulation that the first 30 years must be served in prison. Two other co-defendants were also implicated in the car break-in ring.
