In the early morning hours of March 17, 2018, the body of 22-year-old Corey Joseph Proctor was discovered in the driver's seat of his green Dodge Stratus on the north end of Golden Isles Parkway in Brunswick, Georgia. Proctor, a resident of Brantley County, had sustained a fatal gunshot wound. It was believed he had been killed late on the night of March 16th or early the following morning. The discovery was made by hunters who were in the area around 7:15 a.m.
and they promptly alerted the authorities.
The Glynn County Police Department immediately launched a homicide investigation into the death of the young man, who was a father of three children and worked as a cook and waiter at a local restaurant. The investigation led to the arrests of a married couple, Tiffany Renee Brown, 32, and Akeem Juwon Brown, 31. Tiffany Brown was taken into custody on April 5, 2018, and her husband was arrested about ten days later. Both were charged in connection with Proctor's murder.
According to the indictment, it was alleged that Tiffany Brown had lured Proctor to the remote location where he was subsequently shot and killed with a. 40-caliber firearm. She was indicted on charges of murder, aggravated assault, and tampering with evidence. Akeem Brown was also charged with murder. The prosecution's case, however, faced a significant setback.
In a turn of events, the district attorney for the Brunswick Judicial Circuit announced in June 2021 that his office would not be pursuing charges against the couple. The decision was based on legal complications arising from marital privilege. Tiffany Brown, who was considered a key witness against her husband, refused to testify. Without her testimony, the prosecution determined there was insufficient evidence to prove guilt beyond a reasonable doubt. Despite the charges being dropped, law enforcement officials have stated that the case is not closed and the investigation into the death of Corey Joseph Proctor remains ongoing.
