In the spring of 2018, a confrontation over a stolen car in southwest Atlanta ended in the tragic death of 43-year-old Tiawan Williams. An African American man, Williams had tracked his wife's stolen vehicle to a residence on Nathan Road on the evening of May 10th. There, he confronted Quordell Tarver, the man he believed was responsible for the theft.
The encounter quickly escalated as both men were armed.
A heated verbal altercation turned violent, erupting in a shootout between the two. When police responded to the scene at 8:39 p.m., they found both men suffering from gunshot wounds. Tiawan Williams was pronounced dead at the scene.
Quordell Tarver sustained a gunshot wound to his leg and was transported to Grady Memorial Hospital in stable condition. Following the incident, Tarver was arrested. However, his arrest was based on several outstanding felony warrants for unrelated charges, including weapons, robbery, and escape. The investigation into the fatal shootout that claimed Tiawan Williams's life was reported to be ongoing.
