In the early morning hours of July 19, 2018, the life of 18-year-old Emanul M. Banks was tragically cut short on a street in Columbus, Georgia, that had already seen its share of violence. Known to his loved ones as 'Toot Toot,' Banks, a Black male, was discovered outside a residence on Winston Road, having succumbed to multiple gunshot wounds. The scene of the young man's death was grimly marked by about 70 police evidence markers, indicating the intensity of the attack he had faced.
His body was found merely 50 feet from a makeshift memorial for another man who had been fatally shot just two months prior, a somber testament to the dangers that plagued the neighborhood.
Emanul was remembered as a bright individual, full of life and laughter, who sought refuge from the perils of his surroundings by playing basketball at a local recreation center. Despite his vibrant spirit, he became another victim of the violence that locals, even pizza delivery drivers, knew to avoid. Following the discovery of his body, the Muscogee County Chief Deputy Coroner officially pronounced him dead at 2:12 a.m. An autopsy was ordered to be performed by the Georgia Crime Lab to determine the full extent of his injuries.
The investigation into the death of Emanul Banks was launched by the Columbus Police Department, who processed the extensive crime scene for evidence. However, despite their efforts, the case grew cold. To date, the homicide of Emanul Banks is officially listed as an unsolved case by the Columbus Police Department. There have been no public announcements regarding any arrests made or suspects identified in connection with his murder, leaving his family and community still waiting for justice.
