On a Christmas night that should have been filled with festive cheer, tragedy struck in Cordele, Georgia, ending the life of 28-year-old Tonay McCall. The young man was discovered inside a car in the parking lot of Joe's Meat Market on South Joe Wright Drive on December 25, 2018, having suffered a fatal gunshot wound. The Cordele Police Department received the call around 11:30 p.m. and upon arrival, found McCall deceased at the scene.
The Georgia Bureau of Investigation was called in to assist with the homicide investigation.
In the weeks that followed, the investigation pointed towards a person of interest. Law enforcement officials publicly identified 41-year-old Demarcus 'Chip' Bell as a person they wished to speak with in connection to McCall's death. Bell was already a wanted man, having an outstanding warrant from a November 27th incident where he allegedly crashed a car while fleeing from a sheriff's deputy and then brandished a weapon. Authorities released photographs of a car Bell might be driving and sought the public's help in locating him.
The search for Bell culminated in his apprehension on February 11, 2019. After a brief standoff, he was arrested without incident in Jacksonville, Florida. His arrest was the result of a collaborative effort involving multiple agencies, including the U.S. Marshals and the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office. While Bell was taken into custody, information regarding whether he was ever formally charged with the murder of Tonay McCall, or the subsequent outcome of any legal proceedings, is not publicly available. The trail of the investigation into McCall's death grew cold, leaving a lingering sense of unresolved justice for a life cut short on a day meant for celebration.
