In the winter of 2019, a tragic event unfolded in Canton, Georgia, leading to the death of 55-year-old Tammy Gilbert. On the evening of Saturday, January 5th, Cherokee County deputies were dispatched to a residence on Lower Burris Road. Upon their arrival, they were met by Jesse Simmons, who informed them that his girlfriend, Tammy Gilbert, had shot herself.
Gilbert was immediately transported by ambulance to Wellstar Kennestone Hospital in Marietta. Despite the efforts of medical personnel, she succumbed to a single gunshot wound. Investigators began to piece together the events of that night. Through a series of interviews and a careful review of the evidence, a different narrative began to emerge from the one initially provided by Simmons.
The investigation led authorities to believe that Gilbert's death was not a suicide. As a result, on Sunday, the day after the incident, 40-year-old Jesse Simmons was arrested. He was subsequently charged with murder, aggravated assault, and possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime. Simmons was taken into custody and held at the Cherokee Adult Detention Center without bond. The case then moved to the legal system for trial and adjudication.
