In the early morning hours of January 26, 2019, the life of 22-year-old Julian Kani Thomas, an African American male, was tragically cut short in Waycross, Georgia. Responding to a call shortly after 1 a.m., law enforcement found Julian inside a residence on Garland Avenue, suffering from a gunshot wound. He was quickly transported to Memorial Satilla Health Medical Center, but unfortunately succumbed to his injuries.
The investigation into Julian's death swiftly pointed to a familial
connection. His own brother, Myron Thomas, was identified as the primary suspect. The events leading to Myron's capture began to unfold a couple of hours after the shooting when police received a report of a stolen Chevrolet from a home on Folks Street. The vehicle's owner had left the keys inside, only to see it being driven away and crashing into a nearby fence.
Later that morning, around 5 a.m., Myron Thomas encountered mechanical problems with the stolen vehicle in Manor, Georgia. He sought assistance from residents of a nearby home, who gave him a ride to Homerville. However, after learning about the murder in Waycross, the helpful citizens grew suspicious and contacted the authorities. Law enforcement from the Homerville Police Department and the Clinch County Sheriff's Office located Myron Thomas, who then attempted to flee on foot. He was apprehended after a short chase.
During the investigation, police recovered the keys to the stolen vehicle and a handgun. It was discovered that the handgun had been reported stolen from Columbus, Georgia, in November of the previous year. Myron Thomas was subsequently charged with murder, aggravated assault, and possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime in connection with the death of his brother, Julian Thomas.
