In the late spring of 2019, a Norcross, Georgia community was shaken by a violent crime that left a man dead in the front yard of a residence. On May 24th, police responded to a call at a home on Silver Lake Drive where they discovered the body of 38-year-old Israel Martinez-Hernandez. He had sustained a fatal gunshot wound. The initial investigation began with few leads, but authorities worked quickly to identify and apprehend a person of interest.
Just days after the shooting, the Gwinnett County Police Department announced an arrest in the case. Telesforo Renteria, a 45-year-old man from Atlanta, was taken into custody and charged in connection with the death of Martinez-Hernandez. The charges brought against Renteria were serious, including felony murder and aggravated assault, suggesting a violent and direct confrontation led to the victim's demise.
Following his arrest, Telesforo Renteria was booked into the Gwinnett County Detention Center, where he was held without bond. The motive for the shooting and the relationship between Martinez-Hernandez and Renteria were not immediately made public as the investigation continued. Friends and acquaintances of Israel Martinez-Hernandez remembered him as a fun-loving and hardworking individual, making the sudden and violent nature of his death all the more tragic for those who knew him.
