In the late summer of 2019, the life of Justin David 'Jud' Beebe, a 43-year-old white male, came to a tragic end in Athens, Georgia. On September 18, he was found deceased at his residence on Crow's Nest Court, having sustained a fatal gunshot wound to the head. Beebe, a U.S. Navy veteran and a supervisor at Charter Communications, was known by friends and family for his love of music and his role as a deejay at gatherings.
Initially, the circumstances surrounding Beebe's death were reported as a suicide. However, the Athens-Clarke County Police Department continued to investigate the incident. Over the course of nearly two years, detectives meticulously re-examined the evidence from the scene, autopsy reports, and other records. This prolonged and in-depth investigation led authorities to a different conclusion: that Beebe's death was not self-inflicted.
In August 2021, the investigation culminated in the arrest of Beebe's 32-year-old girlfriend, Anna Gatlin Petree. She was taken into custody at the same home where Beebe had died and was subsequently charged with murder and aggravated assault. The prosecution's theory was that Petree had intentionally shot Beebe, with a potential motive being the collection of an insurance policy.
The case against Anna Gatlin Petree proceeded to a jury trial in Clarke County Superior Court. During the trial, the prosecution attempted to introduce evidence regarding an insurance policy but was unable to do so after a judge ruled that the proper foundation for its admission had not been established. Ultimately, the jury found Petree not guilty of both malice and felony murder. Following the acquittal, Petree was released from custody. In a public statement, she maintained her innocence and asserted that Beebe's death was a suicide that she had tragically witnessed.
