In the small town of Claxton, Georgia, a night that began with the sounds of music and youthful energy ended in a sudden and violent tragedy, forever altering the lives of two families. On the evening of November 3, 2019, 22-year-old Steven Craig “Brutus” Moore was at a club where he had helped organize a party for local teenagers. Adults were also in attendance, serving as chaperones to ensure the event remained a safe and enjoyable one for the younger crowd.
However, the festive atmosphere soured when a 'dis song' was played, creating tension and chaos that ultimately led to the party being shut down.
As the attendees began to disperse, a confrontation unfolded that would have fatal consequences. Mickey Lewis Byrd, Jr., who was present as a chaperone, had earlier made a comment about having his 'stick on me,' a slang term for carrying a firearm. Following the abrupt end of the party, as Steven Moore was getting into his car to leave, Byrd approached him. Two witnesses saw Byrd shoot Moore three times. Another witness heard the gunshots but did not see the shooting itself. The medical examiner would later confirm that Moore died from three gunshot wounds.
In the immediate aftermath of the shooting, the investigation was hampered by the reluctance of several witnesses to come forward. However, investigators were eventually able to piece together the events of that night and secure an arrest warrant for Mickey Lewis Byrd, Jr. Despite their efforts, Byrd could not be immediately located. He was eventually found and arrested in Statesboro. After being transported back to Claxton, he was read his Miranda rights and agreed to speak with investigators, but he denied killing Moore, claiming the two were like 'family.'
The case proceeded to a bench trial where Mickey Lewis Byrd, Jr., was convicted of malice murder and other crimes in connection with the shooting death of Steven Moore. The evidence presented included the testimony of eyewitnesses who saw Byrd shoot Moore. Additionally, text messages sent by Byrd's girlfriend's teenage daughter on the night of the party stated, “Mickey probably going to jail,” “I saw everything I can't believe I saw tha ” and “ killed Brutus.” Byrd was ultimately sentenced to life in prison with the possibility of parole for malice murder, with an additional five years for possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony. His subsequent appeals, which argued insufficiency of evidence and ineffective legal counsel, were denied, and his convictions were affirmed.
