On a Saturday evening in January 2020, a young man’s life was cut short in a fatal shooting at an Exxon gas station on Lawrenceville Highway in Lilburn, Georgia. Giovanni Segura, a 23-year-old Hispanic male from Lawrenceville, was with his girlfriend when an altercation unfolded. The dispute escalated, and Segura was shot. His girlfriend immediately called 911 and rushed him to Eastside Medical Center, but he succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead at the hospital.
The Lilburn Police Department, with assistance from the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, quickly launched an investigation. Witness statements and surveillance footage from the gas station were instrumental in identifying a suspect. The investigation revealed that the incident began as a confrontation between Segura and another man. According to Segura's girlfriend, the man had been trying to get into their car, and Segura confronted him after being verbally insulted. After Segura punched the man, he turned to get back into his vehicle when the suspect opened fire.
The day after the shooting, investigators identified 20-year-old Ulises Oliver Maldonado-Jimenez of Lawrenceville as the suspect. With the help of the Gwinnett County Police Department, Maldonado-Jimenez was arrested at his home. He was subsequently charged with felony murder and two counts of aggravated assault. Authorities do not believe that Segura and Maldonado-Jimenez knew each other prior to the deadly encounter. Maldonado-Jimenez was booked into the Gwinnett County Detention Center where he was held without bond.
In the wake of the tragedy, Giovanni Segura's girlfriend shared that he had acted heroically in his final moments, shielding her from the gunfire. She stated that he 'took both bullets' to protect her. The motive for the initial confrontation and subsequent shooting remained under investigation, with police exploring several theories as to what instigated the fatal events of that night.
