On the early morning of March 1, 2020, 35-year-old Noel Lopez, a Hispanic male, was found deceased in the driver's seat of his vehicle on Interstate 75 South in Ringgold, Georgia. He had sustained a fatal gunshot wound to the head. The events that culminated in his death began after a night out at a Chattanooga nightclub with his wife, Belinda Lopez, and a friend.
While driving home to Dalton, an argument broke out between Noel and Belinda.
The confrontation escalated into a physical altercation. In a fit of rage, Belinda Lopez physically assaulted her husband, scratching his face and upper body before striking him with a firearm. The violence reached its tragic climax when she shot him in the head. The vehicle came to a stop in the middle of the interstate. Before calling 911, Belinda attempted to move her husband's body and hide the weapon.
Catoosa County Sheriff's Office investigators responded to the 911 call made by Belinda Lopez. Initially, she and the other passenger claimed a domestic argument had led to the accidental discharge of the gun. However, inconsistencies in her statements and evidence gathered during the investigation, including findings from an autopsy by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, pointed towards a deliberate act. Further investigation revealed a history of domestic violence perpetrated by Belinda against her husband.
Nearly three months after the incident, Belinda Lopez was arrested and charged with the murder of her husband. During her trial, the prosecution presented evidence of her history of domestic abuse and her conflicting accounts of the shooting. After a four-day trial, a Catoosa County jury deliberated for less than three hours before convicting Belinda Lopez of malice murder, felony murder, two counts of aggravated assault, and possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony. She was subsequently sentenced to life in prison for the murder of Noel Lopez.
