In the late afternoon of July 29, 2020, a dispute in a Macon, Georgia, shopping center parking lot tragically escalated, resulting in the shooting death of 29-year-old Kenneth Bernard Campbell. The incident began with a fight between several individuals in the parking lot of a Little Caesars on Pio Nono Avenue. Following the altercation, Campbell drove away down Montpelier Avenue.
Sometime after leaving, Campbell returned to the area and was shot while driving his vehicle. After being shot, he lost control of his car, which then struck a water main next to the Little Caesars before coming to a stop. Bibb County Sheriff's deputies arrived at the scene to find Campbell unresponsive inside his vehicle. They removed him from the car and administered CPR until paramedics arrived. Campbell was then transported to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead later that evening.
The investigation into Kenneth Campbell's death led to the identification of two suspects. On July 31, 2020, after being notified of a warrant for his arrest, 20-year-old Jaqualin Fryer turned himself in to the Bibb County Sheriff's Office and was charged with murder. Less than two weeks later, on August 11, 2020, the U.S. Marshals Southeast Fugitive Task Force, acting on a tip, located and arrested a second suspect, 26-year-old Trevarus Demonte Kendrick, at a residence on Swan Drive. He was also taken into custody without incident and charged with murder. Both men were held at the Bibb County Jail without bond. In the wake of his death, Campbell's family and friends held a balloon release to honor his memory and to make a plea for an end to community violence.
