DeMario 'Poodah' Wilson, a 25-year-old African American man, was shot and killed on September 8, 2020, at an apartment complex on Godby Road in College Park, an area in the Atlanta, Georgia metropolitan area. The incident that led to his untimely death was a heated argument with a woman described as his close friend.
The dispute that ended in gunfire was with 21-year-old De'Ja Pierre-Ames.
According to police, the argument between Wilson and Pierre-Ames was over a mere $5. During the course of this verbal altercation, Pierre-Ames allegedly shot Wilson. When College Park Police responded to the scene, they found Wilson suffering from a gunshot wound. He was pronounced dead by the Fulton County Medical Examiner.
In the days following the shooting, the community and Wilson's family were left to grapple with the senselessness of the violence. His mother, Monica Wilson, expressed profound grief and disbelief, stating she never imagined such a tragedy would befall her family. She spoke about the need for better conflict resolution skills among young people to prevent similar incidents. Two days after the fatal shooting, De'Ja Pierre-Ames turned herself in to the authorities. She was subsequently charged with murder and is being held in the Fulton County jail. The case drew significant attention due to the trivial nature of the argument that escalated into a homicide, a sentiment echoed by College Park Police Chief Ferman Williford, who remarked on the senselessness of one life being lost and another irrevocably altered.
