In the spring of 2022, a promising young Black man named Anthony 'Chyna' McClain, at the tender age of 17, was tragically killed. The incident occurred on the afternoon of April 2nd, outside the very barbershop he co-owned in Clayton County, a suburban area of Atlanta, Georgia. McClain, a licensed master barber and entrepreneur, was not involved in the conflict that led to his death; he was an innocent bystander caught in a hail of bullets that erupted from a dispute.
The conflict
reportedly began over a drug debt between one of the barbers at the shop and a group of men. This disagreement escalated and spilled out into the parking lot, where a shootout ensued. McClain, who was inside the shop, walked outside and was struck by the gunfire. His life was cut short in a senseless act of violence that was not intended for him. His mother would later recall her belief that he was stepping outside to call her about the escalating situation when he was killed.
In the aftermath of the shooting, law enforcement identified several suspects. Jaimonnie Watkins-Causey and Rontavius Deon Holt were subsequently arrested in connection with McClain's murder. Both men are facing charges of felony murder, aggravated assault, and possession of a weapon during the commission of a crime. Another suspect, Jamoriyan Keon'tai Eutsey, was also identified but remains at large, with authorities offering a reward for information leading to his arrest.
A fourth individual connected to the case, Aliouny Fall, was later identified by police. However, as law enforcement closed in to serve a warrant, Fall died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. The investigation revealed that as many as five or six individuals may have been involved in the incident that led to the untimely death of Anthony McClain, a young man who was just beginning to make his mark on the world.
