Jada and another 5-year-old child, a lifelong friend, were playing together when they discovered a loaded 9mm Smith & Wesson handgun. Believing it to be a toy, one of the children pulled the trigger, firing a single shot that struck Jada in the face. The babysitter, who was in the kitchen at the time, heard the gunshot and the subsequent crying. Rushing to the bedroom, she found Jada bleeding from her wound. Emergency services were called, and Jada was transported to Children's Healthcare of Atlanta at Egleston Hospital, but she ultimately succumbed to her injuries.
In the aftermath of the tragic event, investigators from the DeKalb County Police Department began to piece together the circumstances that led to the fatal shooting.
