Do you know who murdered 16 year old George Waymer Jr in 2012?
On a summer evening in Fairmont-Heights, Maryland, 16-year-old George Waymer Jr. was enjoying a game of basketball with his friends in the 5700 block of Aspen Street. The night of July 8, 2012, took a tragic turn when he was fatally shot. His father, George Waymer Sr., recalled hearing the gunfire and then the dreadful news from one of his son's friends. He rushed outside to find his son unresponsive in the street.
Known to his family as 'Lil George,' Waymer was born in Washington D.C. and had attended schools in both the District and Prince George's County. Ambitious and hardworking from a young age, he began sweeping floors at a barbershop at just 10 years old and eventually learned to cut hair. He had also attended the Virginia National Guard Commonwealth Challenge Youth Academy and harbored dreams of playing college football for the University of Miami with the ultimate goal of being drafted into the NFL.
In the immediate aftermath of the shooting, the Prince George's County police began an investigation, with detectives believing that robbery was the most likely motive for the senseless act of violence. Eyewitnesses reported seeing a green Ford Crown Victoria in the vicinity around the time of the shooting, and police suspected the occupants may have been involved. Another account from one of the boys with Waymer that night mentioned the shooter was in a light-blue car and that someone got out and began firing.
Despite public pleas from his mother, Laquette Dunn, and police detectives for anyone with information to come forward, the case has grown cold. Years have passed, and the person or persons responsible for George Waymer Jr.'s death have never been identified, and no arrests have been made in connection with his murder. The case remains an unsolved homicide, leaving a family to mourn and a community still waiting for justice.
