In the early morning hours of March 20, 2022, the life of 28-year-old Donte J. Morton of District Heights, Maryland, was cut short in a fatal shooting. The incident unfolded around 3:00 a.m. in a parking lot on the 8500 block of Ashwood Drive in Capitol Heights. When Prince George's County Police officers arrived at the scene, they discovered Morton suffering from multiple gunshot wounds.
Morton was rushed to a nearby hospital, but his injuries proved to be too severe, and he was
pronounced dead a short time later. The investigation into the shooting also revealed that a second adult male was shot during the same incident. His injuries, however, were not considered life-threatening.
The Prince George's County Police Department's Homicide Unit took charge of the investigation. According to their preliminary findings, an altercation occurred during which both Donte Morton and the other man fired handguns. Investigators were able to identify all the individuals involved in the incident and were actively reviewing the evidence. The police also stated that they were in consultation with the State's Attorney's Office to determine what, if any, criminal charges would be filed in the case. As of the available reports, there has been no public announcement regarding any arrests made or specific suspects charged in connection with Morton's death.
