In the winter of 2021, a family tragedy unfolded in Columbus, Georgia, culminating in the death of 70-year-old Walter Williams Sr. A United States Army veteran and a beloved groundskeeper at Columbus State University, Williams was known as a devout member of his church community where he served as a deacon.
On the afternoon of January 11, 2021, events took a fatal turn. Williams' stepson, Marlon Jarrell Reese, who was 36 at the time, arrived at the family home on Mehaffey Street.
Earlier that day, Reese had reportedly been at the residence, upset and making accusations against his stepfather. Although he had left after being calmed down by his mother, Cynthia Williams, he returned later that afternoon, this time armed with a gun.
An altercation ensued, and Reese allegedly shot his stepfather multiple times. His mother, Cynthia Williams, made the frantic 911 call, identifying her son as the shooter. When police arrived at the scene around 4:45 p.m., they found Reese in the front yard. Initially, he claimed there was an active shooter inside holding his mother hostage, but he later admitted to being the one who fired the weapon. Inside the home, officers discovered Walter Williams Sr. deceased in the hallway.
Marlon Jarrell Reese was taken into custody at the scene and subsequently charged with murder. During an interview with investigators, he allegedly expressed confusion about his arrest, alluding to his belief that he had shot someone who had harmed a child. Reese later pleaded not guilty to the charges against him. The case then proceeded into the legal system for trial.
