In the small town of Oglethorpe, Georgia, the evening of March 11, 2021, took a tragic turn, forever altering the lives of a local family and shaking the community. On that Thursday night, first responders were called to what appeared to be a routine single-vehicle accident in the 400 block of Kaigler Street. Inside the car, they discovered 19-year-old Hashim Jabari Haugabook II, a young male who was initially presumed to be a casualty of the crash.
However, the scene held a more sinister truth.
As the Georgia Bureau of Investigation was called in to assist the Oglethorpe Police Department, it quickly became apparent that Hashim's death was not the result of a traffic accident. The investigation revealed that he had been shot and killed before the vehicle crashed. An autopsy would later confirm that a single gunshot wound was the cause of his death, transforming the case into a homicide investigation that sent ripples of concern through the tight-knit community.
The investigation progressed swiftly, and within days, an arrest was made. On March 15, 2021, Zaccheus Charnard Kendrick, a 19-year-old from the nearby town of Montezuma, was taken into custody. He was charged with murder, felony murder, and aggravated assault in connection with Hashim's death. The initial arrest was part of a broader investigation that ultimately led to a total of five individuals being arrested in the case. However, only Kendrick and a co-defendant, Makevion Bonner, would face murder charges.
In June 2022, the case against Kendrick and Bonner went to trial. After hearing the evidence presented, a jury found Zaccheus Kendrick guilty of malice murder, felony murder, armed robbery, and aggravated assault. The conviction on the armed robbery charge suggested a motive for the violent end to Hashim's young life. Subsequently, Kendrick was sentenced to life in prison. In contrast, Makevion Bonner was found not guilty on all counts and was acquitted. The resolution of the trial brought a measure of justice for Hashim Jabari Haugabook II, though the profound loss for his family and community remains.
