In the early morning hours of July 25, 2021, a large block party on James Jackson Parkway in Atlanta, Georgia, turned tragic, leading to the death of 38-year-old Gabriel Parker. Parker, a Black father, was in attendance at the gathering, which was a reunion for former residents of the Bowen Homes public housing project, when gunfire erupted. According to his family, Parker was attempting to de-escalate a fight when the shooting occurred.
An Atlanta police officer, Christopher Diss, was
present at the event and discharged his firearm in response to hearing gunshots within the crowd of approximately 1,000 people. In the ensuing chaos, Parker was fatally shot and another man was wounded and taken to a hospital. Two handguns were later found at the scene. Initially, it was unclear who fired the fatal shot that killed Parker. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation was called in to investigate the officer-involved shooting.
In the years following the incident, the investigation into Gabriel Parker's death continued, causing his family significant distress as they awaited answers. In April 2025, it was reported that another individual who was involved in the shooting, Keith Lofton, had entered an Alford plea to a charge of voluntary manslaughter in connection with Parker's death. While not admitting guilt, the plea acknowledged that the prosecution had enough evidence for a conviction. Lofton was subsequently sentenced to serve eight years in prison. The officer who fired his weapon at the scene, Christopher Diss, resigned from the Atlanta Police Department in September 2022 and joined another metro area police department. The case also brought attention to the backlog of investigations by the Atlanta Citizen Review Board.
