In the quiet suburbs of Alpharetta, Georgia, the life of 24-year-old Connor Walsh Mediate was cut tragically short on the evening of October 14, 2021. A graduate of St. Francis High School and Kennesaw State University, he was remembered by loved ones for his infectious personality and a warm smile that could light up a room. His passions were fishing and cars, and he was known for his independent spirit and kind heart. That night, however, in the parking lot of the Collingwood Apartments, Connor was found unconscious in a pool of blood, having been shot during what authorities would later describe as a robbery gone wrong. First responders attempted to render aid, but he was pronounced dead at the scene.
The Alpharetta Police Department launched an intensive investigation into the homicide. Their efforts led them, a month later, to two Milton High School student-athletes. On November 17, 2021, with the assistance of the North Fulton SWAT team, police arrested 17-year-old Cameron Walker and 18-year-old Jonathan Murray. The two were charged with criminal attempt to commit armed robbery and murder in connection with Mediate's death. Investigators determined that Walker had arranged to meet Mediate under the pretense of purchasing marijuana but had intended to rob him, bringing Murray along.
The legal proceedings that followed were a long and arduous process for the Mediate family, marked by numerous delays. For over three years, they navigated the complexities of the justice system, attending court hearings that were often postponed. During this time, one of the defendants was granted bond and released from jail, a development that spurred the family to advocate for bail reform for those accused of violent crimes through a 'Justice for Connor' movement.
In September 2025, the case reached a significant turning point when Walker and Murray reached a plea agreement with prosecutors. They pleaded guilty to a series of charges, including voluntary manslaughter, criminal attempt to commit armed robbery, aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, criminal attempt to purchase marijuana, and possession of a firearm. Before sentencing, Connor's parents delivered powerful victim impact statements, expressing the profound and unending grief their family has endured. They spoke of the immeasurable loss of their son and the life sentence of sorrow they now face. Following their emotional testimony, the judge sentenced Cameron Walker to 25 years in prison, while Jonathan Murray received a 20-year sentence.
