In the days leading up to Thanksgiving in 2021, a family was shattered by an act of violence that silenced a man known for a smile that could illuminate a room. Ralph John Douglas Hickey, a 41-year-old Black man, was fatally shot in a parking lot in southwest Atlanta on November 19, 2021. A father of six from Gwinnett County, Hickey was a man of industry and compassion, running his own appliance repair business to provide for his family.
He also dedicated his time to mentoring young Black men through a nonprofit organization he founded, instilling in them the values of entrepreneurship and self-sufficiency.
On the evening he was killed, Hickey was working a side job as a food delivery driver to earn extra money. His life was abruptly ended by gunfire, leaving his loved ones to grapple with a sudden and devastating loss. The news reached his older brother, Michael Hickey, in a heartbreaking early morning phone call, forever changing the landscape of their family. The absence of Ralph's trademark smile, a rare but genuine expression of joy, was profoundly felt during the subsequent holiday gatherings that year.
The investigation into Hickey's death was part of a grim tally for Atlanta, which saw a significant increase in homicides in 2021, marking it as the city's deadliest year in over two decades. In connection with the shooting, the Atlanta police later made an arrest, bringing a suspect into custody.
