In a tragic turn of events that shattered a family's hope for a safer life, 11-year-old Elijah Munson, a Black male, was fatally shot in Riverdale, Georgia, on the evening of December 9, 2021. The Munson family had relocated to the Atlanta area from Chicago in an effort to escape the very gun violence that ultimately claimed young Elijah's life. He was a fifth-grader at Riverdale Elementary School who dreamed of one day becoming a professional football player.
The incident occurred around 5:19 p.m. in the 6000 block of Westbury Road. Elijah was in the company of a group of friends, including his 12-year-old best friend, when an argument broke out. During the dispute, the 12-year-old boy allegedly pulled out a handgun and shot Elijah. The shooting was witnessed by one of Elijah's older brothers. One witness reported hearing someone say, 'You play too much, man,' just before the fatal shot was fired. Elijah was pronounced dead at the scene, just a short distance from where he lived with his grandparents and three brothers.
In the aftermath of the shooting, Clayton County police arrested the 12-year-old suspect. He was charged as a juvenile with a range of offenses, including murder, aggravated assault, tampering with evidence, and cruelty to children. The investigation also sought to determine the ownership of the firearm and whether the owner would face any charges.
Elijah's mother, Kendall Munson, expressed her profound grief and shock, stating that she believed the shooting was a tragic accident and not a malicious act. She lamented that a child had access to a gun, which led to the devastating loss of her son. The family was preparing for the Christmas holiday, and Elijah had been looking forward to receiving an Xbox. His death came only a couple of weeks after the family had experienced another tragedy, the shooting death of his 5-year-old cousin.
