On a Sunday evening in November 2020, a burst of gunfire shattered the peace at a mobile home park in Clayton County, Georgia, leaving a scene of chaos and tragedy. When Clayton County police officers arrived at the Melrose Mobile Home Park on Museum Circle, they discovered a grim tableau. One man, later identified as 34-year-old Carlos Rebolledo, lay lifeless in a grassy area, a victim of the violent outbreak.
The shooting, which occurred on November 15, 2020, resulted in multiple casualties. In addition to Mr. Rebolledo, three other individuals were struck by bullets. One of these victims, 34-year-old Everardo Esparza of Jonesboro, was rushed to a nearby hospital where he succumbed to his injuries. Two other people were also wounded in the incident but were reported to have non-life-threatening injuries. The motive for the deadly confrontation was not immediately clear to investigators who began the arduous task of piecing together the events of that night.
For months, the case remained under active investigation. Then, in February 2021, a breakthrough was announced. The Clayton County Sheriff's Office, with the assistance of homicide detectives, identified a suspect in the fatal shootout. Alberto Ayala Penaloza, a 20-year-old from Roswell, was taken into custody at his girlfriend's home in Tucker.
Penaloza was identified as one of the shooters involved in the incident that claimed the lives of Carlos Rebolledo and Everardo Esparza. Following his arrest, he was charged with one count of murder and one count of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. He was subsequently booked into the Clayton County Jail, where he was held without bond. The investigation into the double homicide continued, but the arrest of a suspect marked a significant development in the quest for justice for the victims and their families.
