In the late afternoon of July 20, 2022, a dispute inside a popular Riverdale, Georgia restaurant tragically escalated, ending the life of 31-year-old Emmanuel Udoh. The incident occurred at the American Wings and Hibachi on Georgia Highway 138, a busy thoroughfare in Clayton County. Officers were dispatched to the scene shortly after 3 p.m. and discovered Mr. Udoh on the floor, having sustained multiple gunshot wounds. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Investigators quickly began to piece together the events that led to the fatal shooting, relying on surveillance footage from the restaurant and statements from witnesses. According to the Clayton County Police, the evidence indicated that Emmanuel Udoh, a male, had engaged in a confrontation with another man at the restaurant's counter. The altercation culminated in the other individual shooting Mr. Udoh before fleeing the location in a vehicle with several other people. The gunfire shattered two of the restaurant's windows.
Through their investigation, authorities identified 21-year-old DeAnthony Whiteside as the suspect in the shooting. Warrants were subsequently issued for his arrest on charges of malice murder and possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime. On July 29, 2022, nine days after the incident, DeAnthony Whiteside surrendered to law enforcement, turning himself in at the Clayton County Jail. He was booked into the facility where he remained without bond.
