In the late afternoon of Thursday, February 24, 2022, emergency services in Statesboro, Georgia, responded to a call of shots fired at the Freedom's Landing housing complex on the Georgia Southern University campus. Upon arrival at approximately 3:30 p.m., officers from both the Statesboro Police Department and the Georgia Southern University police found 18-year-old Kelsey Terrell Parrish Jr. with a single gunshot wound.
Parrish, who was from Swainsboro and not a student at the university, was transported by Bulloch County Emergency Medical Service to East Georgia Regional Medical Center. Tragically, he was pronounced dead on arrival.
An investigation into the shooting was launched, and Parrish's body was taken to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation Crime Lab for an autopsy. Following the autopsy, the Bulloch County Coroner, Jake Futch, announced that the death was the result of an accidental, self-inflicted gunshot wound. Futch clarified that while the wound was self-inflicted, it was not an intentional act. Based on these findings, no foul play was suspected, and no arrests were made in connection with the incident.
