The male teenager, a freshman at Creekside High School, was fatally shot on March 5, 2022, following a dispute that escalated into gunfire near the intersection of Pryor and Bass streets in southwest Atlanta.
Two other teenagers, aged 14 and 19, were also wounded in the shooting but were expected to survive their injuries.
The incident began with a fight that broke out as the fair was letting out, a time when the area was crowded with both vehicle and pedestrian traffic. This altercation, which stemmed from a pre-existing dispute, quickly turned deadly when shots were fired. Joshua was among the group involved in the initial dispute before the shooting occurred. Weeks after the shooting, on March 25, 2022, the Atlanta Police Department announced the arrests of three individuals in connection with Joshua's death. The suspects included 19-year-old Marquez D. Harris and two unnamed juveniles. Harris was taken into custody by a fugitive task force and subsequently faced charges of murder, aggravated assault with intent to murder, and criminal attempt to commit murder. Investigators believe Harris was the shooter, with the two juveniles acting as accomplices; they were also charged with murder. The arrests brought a measure of progress in a case that underscored the tragic consequences of escalating disputes and gun violence.
