In the late hours of March 5, 2022, a violent encounter in the Rocky Plains community of south Newton County left 29-year-old Charles Edward Stanley dead from multiple gunshot wounds. The incident unfolded on Harvey Wood Drive when a resident reported a suspicious man had stolen a vehicle and crashed it into a tree in her yard. When deputies arrived, they found Stanley unresponsive in the wrecked vehicle. Emergency medical personnel pronounced him dead at the scene.
The investigation into Stanley's death led to the arrests of two Covington men, Shane Alexander Robinson, 27, and Tyrez Riquan Bell, 22. Authorities determined that both men, who were acquaintances of Stanley, had fired AR-style rifles at the vehicle he was driving. An arrest warrant for Robinson revealed that he admitted to grabbing his AR-15 rifle and driving to Harvey Wood Drive with the intent to 'scare' Stanley. Robinson confessed to firing several rounds at the vehicle as Stanley was backing up and as he was driving away. In total, Robinson fired 13 shots, and Bell fired seven.
Shane Alexander Robinson was arrested on March 6, 2022, followed by the arrest of Tyrez Riquan Bell on March 22 of the same year. Both men faced charges of murder, aggravated assault, and possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony. Following their trials, both were found guilty. A Newton County jury convicted Robinson in March 2025 of felony murder, aggravated assault, and possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony. In October 2025, a separate jury found Tyrez Riquan Bell guilty of malice murder, felony murder, aggravated assault, and possession of a firearm during a felony. Both men were taken into custody to await sentencing, facing a minimum of 30 years in prison for their roles in the death of Charles Edward Stanley.
