In the spring of 2022, the life of Marcus DeWayne Lewis, II, a 44-year-old African American man, was tragically cut short. On the evening of April 10th, a passerby in Albany, Georgia, noticed a car parked outside of Majestic Motors Auto Sales with its engine still running and the driver's side window shattered. This unsettling discovery prompted a call to the police. When emergency responders arrived at the scene, they found Marcus inside his vehicle, the victim of multiple gunshot wounds. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Known in his community as the owner of the auto dealership, Marcus was a self-employed, licensed car dealer. Born on June 24, 1981, he was educated within the Dougherty County School System and later earned his G.E.D. from Albany Technical College, followed by attendance at Darton College. Beyond his business, he had a passion for working on cars, computer gaming, fishing, and interacting with animals.
The investigation into his death was extensive, leading authorities to identify several individuals believed to be involved. A primary suspect, a 32-year-old African American male, was taken into custody after a brief standoff with law enforcement. Investigators believe that a history of disputes over business dealings may have been the motive behind the violent act. He now faces charges of first-degree murder, armed robbery, and possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime.
The investigation did not end with the primary suspect. Two other individuals were also arrested and are facing charges of accessory to murder and obstruction of justice. It is believed that they aided the main suspect in both the planning and the execution of the crime, including providing the firearm used in the shooting and assisting in his attempt to evade capture in the immediate aftermath. As the legal process continues for the accused, the community remembers a local business owner whose life was taken too soon.
