In the summer of 2022, a dispute in a Conley, Georgia home tragically cut short the life of Monique Miles, a 34-year-old mother. On the afternoon of Thursday, July 21st, police were dispatched to a residence on Richard Road where they discovered a grim scene. Inside, Monique Miles had been shot multiple times and was pronounced dead. In another room, a second woman, identified as Miles' girlfriend, was found with severe gunshot wounds but was still alive. Emergency responders provided immediate aid before she was transported to a local hospital.
Friends of Miles described her as a devoted and loving mother to her young daughter. They recounted that she was visiting her girlfriend, who was renting a room at the Conley house. An argument is believed to have erupted between the girlfriend and the landlord, which then escalated to gunfire. It is thought that Miles, in an attempt to de-escalate the volatile situation, stepped in between her girlfriend and the gunman and was fatally shot. Those who knew her remembered her as a charismatic and happy person who would always try to diffuse tense situations, making her violent death all the more shocking to her loved ones.
The investigation quickly led authorities to identify 69-year-old Charles Wise as the suspected shooter. A manhunt was initiated, and Wise was charged with malice murder, aggravated assault, and possession of a weapon during the commission of a felony. For over a year, Wise remained at large. Then, in January 2024, he was apprehended in Las Vegas, Nevada. Following his arrest, he was extradited back to Georgia to face the charges against him and is being held in the Clayton County jail without bond.
