In the Hudson Hill neighborhood of Savannah, Georgia, on the evening of October 16, 2022, a tragic event unfolded that would cut short the life of a young man. Rashard Arkeen Kinlaw, a 21-year-old African American male, was discovered inside an overturned sedan at the intersection of Mundy and Weldon streets. Initially responding to reports of a single-vehicle crash, officers with the Savannah Police Department soon realized the situation was far more sinister.
Kinlaw was suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. He was rushed to Memorial Medical Center, but despite the efforts of medical personnel, he succumbed to his injuries, marking the 25th homicide in Savannah that year.
The investigation into Rashard Kinlaw's death led authorities to a suspect in a matter of weeks. On November 8, 2022, the U.S. Marshals Service apprehended 17-year-old Jaheim Mitchell in Martinez, Georgia, roughly two and a half hours away from the scene of the crime. Following his arrest, Mitchell was charged with murder in connection with Kinlaw's death. The Savannah Police Department's investigation, which included evidence and witness testimonies, pointed to Mitchell as the perpetrator.
The legal proceedings against Jaheim Mitchell commenced, and on December 21, 2022, a Chatham County grand jury indicted him on a slew of serious charges. These included malice murder, felony murder, aggravated assault, and possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony. The case, however, has experienced significant delays as it has moved through the court system. In August 2025, the trial was postponed because a key witness for the prosecution, the medical examiner, was unavailable to testify. The trial for Mitchell, who is now 20 years old, saw closing arguments expected in February 2026. The community continues to await the conclusion of the legal process, seeking justice for the untimely death of Rashard Kinlaw.
