In the brisk air of a late November evening in Atlanta, the life of 15-year-old Cameron 'Cam' Jackson was tragically cut short. On November 26, 2022, a dispute that began at Atlantic Station, a popular retail district, spilled onto the nearby 17th Street bridge, escalating to gunfire. Cameron, an African American male, was riding a scooter when he was struck by a bullet to the back of the head. He was rushed to a local hospital in critical condition and died three days later.
Another youth, 12-year-old Zyion Charles, was also killed in the shooting, which police later described as gang-related.
Investigators quickly determined that Cameron was the intended target of the shooting. The incident stemmed from an altercation between two rival groups. Prior to the shooting, security at Atlantic Station had escorted a group of minors, including those who would later be identified as suspects, off the property for disorderly conduct and violating the curfew. Surveillance footage captured a group of teens, including the alleged shooters, appearing to celebrate and boast as they boarded a MARTA train at the Arts Center station shortly after the deadly encounter.
In the weeks and months that followed, law enforcement made a series of arrests in connection with the murders of Cameron Jackson and Zyion Charles. The first arrests came in early December 2022, when a 15-year-old and a 16-year-old, both students in Atlanta Public Schools, were taken into custody. One of the suspects was apprehended in New York City by the Atlanta Police Department's fugitive squad with assistance from U.S. Marshals. As the investigation progressed, more suspects were identified and apprehended. In total, six individuals, some as young as 15, were charged in connection with the shooting. The charges included murder, aggravated assault, and violation of the Street Gang Terrorism and Prevention Act.
The legal process saw several of the suspects, who were charged as adults despite their ages, enter into plea deals. In November 2023, Antonio Jackson, Demetrius Hill, and Toney Wilson appeared in a Fulton County courtroom to accept plea agreements. Antonio Jackson received a 20-year sentence with 10 to serve for violating the Criminal Street Gang Act. Demetrius Hill, who prosecutors said fired the fatal shot that killed Cameron Jackson, was sentenced to 40 years with 30 to serve. Toney Wilson, 16, pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter and violating the gang act, receiving a 40-year sentence with 20 to be served. A fourth suspect, Derodney Russell, was also arrested and charged with murder. The case highlighted the devastating impact of gang violence on the city's youth, a sentiment echoed by Cameron's mother, who spoke in court about the heartbreaking loss of her son and the tragic circumstances that led to another young person taking his life. While his family remembered him as a disciplined and aspiring Olympic boxer who was homeschooled to focus on his training, the events of that November night painted a starkly different and tragic picture of his final moments.
