On the evening of December 12, 2022, a simple mistake at a gas station in South Fulton, Georgia, ended in the tragic death of 26-year-old Trayvon Dunnaville. After finishing work, Dunnaville and his pregnant fiancée stopped at a Shell gas station located on Old National Highway. He went into the convenience store, and upon returning to the parking lot, he mistakenly approached a car that was similar to his fiancée's and opened the door.
The driver of that vehicle, Dericole Daniel, reacted by shooting Dunnaville four times. His fiancée, who witnessed the event from their nearby car, ran over and pleaded with the shooter to stop, explaining that he was at the wrong vehicle. Security footage from the gas station captured the unfortunate sequence of events, showing Dunnaville walking from the store and heading toward the wrong car, which was parked just one row away from his own.
Dericole Daniel was arrested at the scene. Initially, he was charged with misdemeanor voluntary manslaughter and was later released on a $150,000 bond. Two years after the incident, a grand jury indicted Daniel on a charge of felony murder. In a subsequent legal development, the Fulton County District Attorney's Office offered Daniel a plea deal.
Daniel accepted the agreement and pleaded guilty to the lesser charge of voluntary manslaughter. He received a 25-year sentence, with the terms requiring him to serve five years in prison followed by 20 years of probation. In an unusual condition for such a serious case, the plea deal allowed Daniel to self-report to the Fulton County Jail by September 2nd of the following year. His defense attorney stated that Daniel believed he was about to be robbed and acted in fear for his life.
