In Moultrie, Georgia, on the evening of December 17, 2022, a domestic dispute turned fatal, ending the life of 44-year-old Jason Chad McCollum. The incident, which resulted in a single gunshot wound to McCollum's chest, led to the arrest of a woman who would later argue her actions were in self-defense.
The chain of events unfolded during a heated altercation between McCollum and his estranged wife.
A friend of the wife, Katelyn Lillie Marie Ireland, was present at the residence and witnessed the confrontation. According to testimony, McCollum, upon noticing Ireland standing in a doorway at the top of a wheelchair ramp, shifted his attention towards her and began to approach.
It was at this point that Ireland, then 25 years old and from Adel, discharged a pistol. The bullet struck McCollum, who then staggered back down the ramp and into the front yard where he collapsed. It was Ireland who placed the 911 call as she went to McCollum, who was on the ground gasping for air. He was later pronounced dead at Colquitt Regional Medical Center.
Following the shooting, Katelyn Ireland was arrested and faced serious charges, including one count of felony murder, two counts of aggravated assault, and one count of possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime. A Colquitt County judge set her bond at $150,000.
However, the legal proceedings took a significant turn when Ireland maintained that she had acted in self-defense. Nineteen months after the incident, a judge granted her immunity from prosecution. Subsequently, the District Attorney's Office dropped all charges against her. The court's decision was based on a two-day hearing where testimonies described the volatile situation and McCollum's advance towards Ireland before the fatal shot was fired.
