John Milton, a 57-year-old white male, died on April 1, 1865, in Marianna, Florida. Milton, who served as the Governor of Florida during the American Civil War, was a staunch supporter of the Confederacy and an advocate for secession. His death was a result of a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head, which he committed at his plantation, "Sylvania," near Marianna.
