Gregory Barnett Jr., a 22-year-old resident of Marianna, Florida, tragically lost his life on March 18, 2017. The incident occurred at a home on Old Cottondale Road, where Barnett was found lying in the yard with gunshot wounds. Emergency Medical Services (EMS) were summoned, but Barnett was pronounced dead at the scene. The initial investigation by the Marianna Police Department revealed that Barnett had been involved in an altercation with Ja’Drian Gilbert and another individual named Michael James before the shooting occurred.

Ja’Drian Gilbert was identified as the primary suspect in the shooting. According to the police report, Gilbert had left the scene before law enforcement arrived but later turned himself in on March 19, 2017, accompanied by his attorney. Gilbert was subsequently charged with second-degree murder and held without bond. The prosecution argued that Gilbert had acted with disregard for human life, while the defense claimed that Gilbert had acted in self-defense during a physical altercation with James and Barnett.

The case went to trial more than two years later, where the jury was presented with evidence and testimonies from various witnesses, including Gilbert himself. During the trial, Assistant State Attorney Shalla Jefcoat highlighted inconsistencies in Gilbert's statements, suggesting that he had changed his story multiple times to benefit himself. The defense, led by attorney Roderick Vereen, maintained that Gilbert had acted in self-defense, stating that Barnett had pulled out a gun during the altercation, prompting Gilbert to react by firing his weapon.

Despite the prosecution's arguments, the jury found Gilbert not guilty of second-degree murder after deliberating for about three hours. The verdict was reached on August 29, 2019, and Gilbert was subsequently released from custody. The trial's outcome was influenced by the lack of a weapon found at the crime scene and the defense's assertion that Gilbert had acted out of fear for his life. The case remains a poignant reminder of the complexities and challenges involved in legal proceedings related to violent crimes.
