Sheldon S. "Shelley" Nicks, a 23-year-old deputy sheriff, tragically lost his life on May 8, 1909, in Pasco County, Florida. On that fateful day, Deputy Nicks was accompanying his father, the town marshal of Fivay, to serve a warrant. As they attempted to take the suspect into custody, the man produced a handgun. In a heroic act, Deputy Nicks immediately jumped in front of his father to shield him from the gunfire. The suspect fired a single shot, which passed through Deputy Nicks' body, killing ...
