Abe Schneider, a 24-year-old deputy from Saint Augustine, Florida, tragically lost his life on March 5, 1911. Schneider was assisting Deputy Guy White in transporting four suspects to jail for disorderly conduct and carrying a weapon. The incident took a fatal turn when one of the suspects produced a handgun during a search at the jail and shot both deputies. Schneider and White were both killed in the line of duty.

Three of the suspects were charged with murder. The primary shooter was convicted of first-degree murder and sentenced to life imprisonment. However, he managed to escape from a turpentine camp on December 26, 1915, only to surrender himself at the state penitentiary on October 25, 1921. The other two suspects were convicted of second-degree murder and received life sentences, but they were paroled after serving less than eight years.
