Frank Dean Genovese, a 26-year-old white male, tragically lost his life on June 3, 1982, in Greenacres, Florida. Deputy Sheriff Genovese was participating in a SWAT team operation responding to a standoff with an armed suspect at 1012 10th Lane in the Chalets IV Development. The suspect had barricaded himself inside his apartment, set his furniture on fire, and threatened to blow up the building.
During the four-hour standoff, Deputy Genovese was fatally shot in the forehead while positioned on a rooftop across the street. Another deputy was also injured in the gunfire.
The suspect, Nick Michael Tufaro, was initially arrested and charged in connection with the incident. However, he was acquitted on December 14, 1984, after his defense argued that the fatal shot might have come from another officer's return fire during the chaotic exchange. Despite his acquittal, Tufaro continued to have run-ins with the law. Six months after his acquittal, he was charged with the attempted murder of a Miami police officer following a high-speed chase that ended with him crashing into police vehicles. In 1988, Tufaro faced additional charges for numerous firearms violations, including the sale and possession of machine guns.
Deputy Genovese, a U.S. Army veteran, had served with the Palm Beach County Sheriff's Department for 16 months and previously with the Daytona Beach Police Department for three years. He was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor on September 13, 1982, in recognition of his bravery and service. His death left a profound impact on his family, colleagues, and the community, and he is remembered for his dedication and sacrifice.
