Benjamin P. Grogan, a 53-year-old white male, was an FBI Special Agent who tragically lost his life on April 11, 1986, in Pinecrest, Florida. His death occurred during a notorious shootout that has since been etched into the annals of FBI history. The incident, often referred to as the 1986 FBI Miami shootout, involved a confrontation between FBI agents and two heavily armed suspects, Michael Lee Platt and William Russell Matix, who were linked to a series of violent bank robberies and murders.
On that fateful day, Grogan, along with his partner Jerry L. Dove and several other agents, attempted to apprehend Platt and Matix. The suspects, both former military personnel, were armed with a Ruger Mini-14 rifle and other high-powered weapons, which significantly outmatched the agents' firepower. The confrontation quickly escalated into a fierce gun battle, lasting approximately five minutes and involving over 130 rounds of gunfire. Despite being outgunned, the agents fought valiantly, but the superior firepower of the suspects resulted in devastating consequences.
During the shootout, Grogan and Dove were fatally wounded, and five other agents sustained injuries. The suspects, Platt and Matix, were eventually killed by Agent Edmundo Mireles, who, despite being wounded, managed to stop them as they attempted to flee the scene. The aftermath of the shootout was a sobering moment for the FBI and law enforcement agencies nationwide, highlighting the need for better equipment and training to handle such high-risk situations.
The deaths of Grogan and Dove led to significant changes within the FBI, including the adoption of more effective firearms and improved body armor. In recognition of their sacrifice, a portion of Southwest 82nd Avenue in Pinecrest was co-designated as Agent Benjamin Grogan Avenue and Agent Jerry Dove Avenue in 2001.
